Kurashova Re-Education™ for Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by a constant presence of wide spread pain in muscles and joints of the body. Other symptoms include chronic aching, stiff muscles, tiredness, sleep problems, depression and digestive problems. It was estimated that five million people are suffering from this condition in the United States in 2001. While there are no conclusive laboratory tests to diagnose this condition, a physical examination by a physician may reveal the presence of FMS by finding 18 tender points in specific locations of the body. Presence of at least 11 out of 18 tender points is indicative of FMS. Fibromyalgia is considered to be the physical counterpart to a nervous breakdown.
The Etiology of FMS is unknown, but there are several causes listed below that may contribute to the onset of this condition:
Stress - major factor in 90% of patients
Prolonged muscle pain (when unresolved)
Muscle or joint trauma (such as a car accident)
when unresolved
Some neurological conditions and problems in the
autoimmune system
Sleep problems (if you don't have REM (deep)
sleep, your muscles cannot relax
Too much exercise
FMS is not considered to be rheumatic in nature, and muscle fiber inflammation is not present in this condition as previously thought. Although joint pain may be present, there is no actual joint involvement. FMS is not really located anywhere in the body, so pain may move around and become progressively worse and can be debilitating in some cases.
Since the Central Nervous System is involved with FMS, and may be chronically over-stimulated, the corresponding treatment is to re-educate the CNS into a more relaxed state. Gliding and manual vibrational techniques are used in the treatment to obtain the following goals:
Central Nervous System - relaxation, decrease
emotional and physical stress
Autonomic Nervous System - restoration
(normalization) of function, increase adrenalin production due to bettered
suprarenal function
Circulation - increase of arterial flow,
increase of serotonin production and delivery
Treatment
Therapy for re-education of Fibromyalgia consists of two treatments a week for 5 weeks. Patients should see a decrease of pain within 3 weeks, and should start seeing improvements in sleeping, digestion and energy levels after the 5th to 7th treatment.
One of the main causes of FMS is the overstimulated Central Nervous System. By creating a positive homeostasis by the use of Kurashova Re-Education™ treatment for Fibromyalgia, decrease of stimulation of the CNS is provided. By decreasing the stimulation of the CNS, pain will be removed. Please note that although we will decrease the pain of the CNS, we will not resolve the cause of the pain if this pain was physical in nature. This physical pain may have to be addressed after the FMS treatment set is completed. On the other hand, if the FMS was caused by stress, the patient should be able to control their stress level with relaxation and visualization techniques without any further intervention. Since we address the CNS with this treatment, no tender points will be treated.
